SkillsNet is the brand for our workforce development initiatives
supporting industry and education in training the incumbent and
emerging workforce of Montgomery County. Workforce is a critical
element of economic development and it is no longer fitting for
communities and companies not to have a strategy for development
of their workforce.
This Industry Consortium SkillsNet Committee chaired by John
Webb of Temple-Inland, partners with the Industry HR group and
Ivy Tech. The committee has contributed over $200,000 in training
grants to our local industries over the last couple of years.
Another branch Committee is the School to Career Committee, co-chaired
by Gary Calleo of RR Donnelley and Kathy Steel, Superintendent
of CHS. The committee’s goal is to establish a manufacturing/business
curriculum to be offered in the high schools by 2006. We are also
forming a new alliance with Character Counts to introduce workplace
ethics into the curriculum for high school seniors.
Through this committee, MCED also initiated and funded the space
for the SkillsNet training center, which later morphed into the
Ivy Tech Community College site. MCED continues to be the major
financial supporter of the College and the MCED executive director
is on the Montgomery County Higher Education Steering Committee.
